Taking a leap of faith to a new career
第一组数据
1、In recent years, there are few new companies started, which has affected employment growth.
2、No one knows whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of resigning his job unless he does it.
3、It seems crazy to quit a job without having a new one, but it can make people feel energized.
4、Leaving a fixed job during an economic recession seems irrational, but the data shows many people shift from employment to self-employment.
5、Timothy’s parents backed him up when he left his stable job for his dream.
6、At a certain period of time, most people dream to change their job, whether it is unbearable or satisfying.
7、Although she suffered a lot shortly after quitting her job, Burgess was very grateful to herself for her resignation from a brilliant company.
8、Timothy left his secure job because the job didn’t fulfill him in every way.
9、The defamation from the media has an incredibly negative impact on many civil servants.
10、Facing layoffs, the first job-hoppers are those who believe that they can get a job somewhere else.
第二组数据
A、It’s a dream most people have at some point: just walking out of their job. It could be because work has become unbearable or unbearably boring. Or maybe it’s the opposite—the job is fine, the colleagues are great and the boss is appreciative. But it’s a rut (老一套), and unless you leave, you know you’ll be stuck on the wage-slave treadmill (令人厌倦的工作) forever. You always want more.
B、This is what motivated Miles Timothy, 24, to leave his secure job last year without a new one lined up. “I’d been working at a small business finance company for two years after leaving university. I was considering it my career as it was going well. But I’ve always been creative and I wanted to do something in that line. My job didn’t entirely fulfill me, and I thought it better to leave it before mortgage, kids and other responsibilities.”
C、So Timothy left last October to set up a website business targeting a niche market. He admits it was a tough decision but has no regrets. “I was worried about telling my family, but my mom said I should go for it, and my dad supported me as well. High unemployment and the state of the economy did concern me, and the general attitude today is that if you’re lucky enough to have a job you should stay as so many people are looking for work.” “But I don’t subscribe to that view. I think it limits you, and you’ve got to keep track of where you want to get. I did my research, gave plenty of notice, and then took the plunge. I saved a bit to keep me ticking over and I’ll have to live without partying for a while, but it’s very exciting and I’m looking forward to the future.”
D、To stay focused, Timothy won’t even take a part-time job. He wants to concentrate all his energy on his new venture. But when Nancy Burgess, 40, left her sales liaison (联络) job in a large publishing house in 2001 to become a freelance translator, she took a part-time job for a short while to keep money coming in. Once there was enough work, she became a full-time freelance translator. “I’d grown tired of the commute and wanted to move out of London,” she recalls. “My degree is in French and I have many friends who are translators, so that got me thinking this was something I could do.” “I knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life clocking in and out, so I left and started a master’s degree in translation studies. I got translation work while there. It snowballed and I’m still doing it now.”
E、Burgess knew it was risky to give up well-paid work with a regular salary, prospects and a pension. “I was working for a brilliant company. It was a high-pressure job involving trips to New York. So it took a lot to step away. But the reality of day-to-day work wasn’t as exciting as it sounds and I was thinking about the future. I knew I wanted kids and to move away from the city. I couldn’t do that if I stayed.” “So, though I woke in the night a few times after I’d given my notice, and wondered if it had been a big mistake (turns out it wasn’t), I’m massively and eternally grateful to myself for taking that step, and to people who supported me. In the end, it’s just you who have to make it work. If you’re good at your job you will find work. Despite the recession, people still need translations and want them done well. If you do a good job, your reputation means they’ll come back to you. I have no regrets.” Now with a six-month-old baby, Burgess is especially grateful for the flexibility of a freelancer’s life.
F、It seems counter-intuitive to leave secure employment during a recession. But statistics show this isn’t anecdotal (轶事的). Charles Levy, a senior economist at The Work Foundation, says, “The latest data from the Office for National Statistics, comparing the three months to October with the previous three months, highlights a significant shift from employment into self-employment. While the number of employees fell 252,000, there were 166,000 more people in self-employment. Rather than wait for employers to gain confidence and recruitment, it’s hoped that workers would start out on their own business. This could create the churn needed to inject dynamism into our economy.”
G、However, it isn’t all good news. “There are signs that some businesses are choosing to use subcontracting and work with networks of self-employed people to avoid tougher rules,” Levy cautions. “The rise of self-employment could simply reflect a change in management practices and benefit rules, rather than a wave of brave new entrepreneurs.”
H、Levy also points out that employment growth has been held back in recent years by a lack of new companies starting and hiring. “This is a real concern. Employment and business churn is vital for a dynamic economy. If people are too afraid or unable to switch jobs, ultimately, the labor productivity will be held back.”
I、Karen Gale, a 31-year-old civil servant working in digital development, is strongly considering it. “We’ve been going through a review common across the public sector and it may lead to redundancies (裁员),” she says. “But in the intervening time, no one knows what their job is. So there’s a lot of uncertainty. It could be a full year before the review is done. When you have redundancies, the first people to jump ship are those confident of getting work elsewhere.” “If I haven’t found something soon I’m just going to leave because I can’t stand it,” she says. “I sit at my desk all day, and try not to cry. I’ve almost forgotten how to do a real job. I feel so deskilled. I need to get out before I become unemployable.”
J、Gale says lots of public sector workers are sick of being defamed in the press. “We’re demonized (被恶魔化). It’s incredibly demotivating. My husband is a journalist and he’s just gone freelance so finances are stretched and we’re broke after our wedding. But he’s told me to just resign, as I go home every night and cry. Our relationship is suffering. For the sake of my mental health and our marriage, I feel I have no choice but to leave. I’ll see if I can get agency work. It might take a while, but I think eventually I’ll get something better.”
K、It might work out better than Gale fears. Leaving a job without one to go can seem like madness, but it can also be energizing. It’s often the most successful people who tend to take risks. Lucy Jolin, 37, left a secure job 10 years ago to become a freelance journalist and author—her latest book is Coping with Drug Problems in the Family. To her, it’s better to regret something you’ve done than something you haven’t.
L、If you’re thinking about taking the plunge it could go badly, but it could be brilliant. You’ll never know unless you do it. And let’s face it; no one’s job is secure these days anyway.

Trojan War
第一组数据
1、The Trojans were assisted during the Trojan War by Apollo, Aphrodite, and Ares.
2、Achilles warned Patroclus to only drive away the Trojans from the camp but not chase them to the walls of Troy.
3、Homer’s Iliad offers the main source for the Trojan War, which was also the subject of a long oral tradition before Iliad.
4、Achilles was shot by Paris with an arrow to his heel, his only weak spot.
5、Patroclus was made exposed and defenseless by great Apollo, and was killed by Hector.
6、In Greek tradition, the Trojan War was launched to first, reduce the ever-growing population of humanity and second, to get Helen back.
7、With the idea of the wooden horse, the Trojan city was destroyed, and finally Helen was taken back.
8、The Trojan city was able to resist the invaders’ siege for so long mainly because of its reinforced fortifications.
9、After killing Hector, Achilles dragged his body all the way to the Greek camp, which was a shameful act and against the rules of ancient warfare.
10、Some scenes from the story of the Trojan War repeatedly appear in art over the centuries.
第二组数据
A、The Trojan War, fought between Greeks and the defenders of the city of Troy in Anatolia sometime in the late Bronze Age, has grabbed the imagination for millennia. The story of gods and heroic warriors is perhaps one of the richest surviving sources from antiquity (古代) and offers insights into the warfare, religion, customs, and attitudes of the ancient Greeks. The main source for our knowledge of the Trojan War is Homer’s Iliad. However, the war was also the subject of a long oral tradition prior to Homer’s work, and this gives us a more complete picture of what exactly the Greeks thought of as the Trojan War.
B、The Trojan War, in Greek tradition, started as a way for Zeus to reduce the ever-increasing population of humanity and, more practically, as an expedition to reclaim Helen, wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta and brother of Agamemnon. Helen was abducted by the Trojan prince Paris and taken as his prize for choosing Aphrodite as the most beautiful goddess in a competition with Athena and Hera at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Menelaus and the Greeks wanted her back and to avenge Trojan impudence (厚颜无耻).
C、The coalition of Greek forces was led by King Agamemnon of Mycenae. Amongst the Greek warriors were some extra special heroes, leaders who were the greatest fighters and displayed the greatest courage on the battlefield. Also, they often had a divine mother or father whilst the other parent was a mortal, thereby creating a genealogical link between the gods and ordinary men. Amongst the most important were Achilles, Odysseus, Ajax, Patroclus, etc. The Greeks were aided by several Olympian gods of Greek religion. Athena, Hera, and Poseidon all gave help to the Greeks in Homer’s account of the war.
D、The Trojan army defending the great city of Troy, led by their king Priam, had assistance from a long list of allies including Mysians, Phrygians, and Thracians. The Trojans, too, had their semi-divine heroes such as Hector (son of Priam) and Rhesos. The Trojans also had help from the gods, receiving assistance during the battle from Apollo, Aphrodite, and Ares.
E、Most of the Trojan War was in fact a protracted siege (包围), and the city was able to resist the invaders for so long principally because its fortifications were so magnificent. There were, though, battles outside the city where armies fought, sometimes with chariots, but mostly by men on foot using spears and swords and protected by a shield, helmet, and armor for the chest and legs.
F、Achilles was quite simply the greatest warrior in Greece, or anywhere else for that matter. Much to the Greek’s frustration, though, he sat out most of the war in a big sulk (愠怒). King Agamemnon had stolen his female war-booty (战利品) Briseis and consequently the hero refused to fight. With the Greek camp under attack, Patroclus appealed to his mentor and great friend Achilles to rejoin the conflict and, when he still refused, Patroclus asked for permission to wear Achilles’ armor and lead the fearful Myrmidons himself. Achilles, on seeing one of the Greek ships already ablaze, reluctantly gave his consent but warned Patroclus to only repel the Trojans from the camp and not pursue them to the walls of Troy.
G、The Trojans were swept back and Patroclus even managed to kill the great Trojan hero Sarpedon. Flushed with success, he then ignored Achilles’ advice and rashly carried the fighting on toward Troy. However, at this point, great Apollo intervened on behalf of the Trojans and struck the helmet and armor from Patroclus, shattered his spear and knocked his shield from his arm. Thus exposed and defenseless, Patroclus was stabbed by Euphorbos and then Hector stepped in to deal the fatal blow with a pitiless stab of his spear.
H、When Achilles discovered the death of his great friend Patroclus, he was overcome with grief and rage and he swore to take terrible revenge on the Trojans and Hector in particular. After a suitable show of mourning, Achilles finally decided to enter the battlefield once more. It was a decision which would seal the fate of Troy. Achilles, still mad with rage, predictably routed (击溃) the Trojans who fled in panic behind the safety of their city walls.
I、Hector alone remained standing outside the walls, but at the sight of the awesome Achilles on the rampage (暴怒), even his nerve gave way and he made a run for safety. Achilles, however, gave chase and pursued the Trojan prince three times around the city walls. Finally catching him, Achilles killed his quarry with a vicious stab of his spear in Hector’s throat. Achilles then stripped the body of its fine armor and, tying Hector by the ankles to his chariot, Achilles dragged the body back to the Greek camp in full view of Priam standing atop the fortifications of the city. This was a shockingly dishonorable act and against all the rules of ancient warfare.
J、Having avenged the death of Patroclus, Achilles arranged funeral games in his fallen friend’s honor. Meanwhile, Priam entered the Greek camp in disguise and begged Achilles to return the body of his son that he might be given proper burial. Although he was initially reluctant, the emotional pleas of the old man were finally heeded and Achilles consented to return the body. Later, Achilles himself met his destiny and was killed by an arrow to his only weak spot, his heel, shot by Paris.
K、The final and decisive action was, though, the idea of the wooden horse. Odysseus, inspired by Athena, thought up the ruse (诡计). First, the Greeks all sailed off into the sunset leaving a mysterious offering to the Trojans of a gigantic wooden horse which in reality concealed a group of warriors within. Just to make sure the Trojans took the horse within the city, Sinon was chosen to stay behind and tell a cock and bull story about the Greeks having given up and left a nice present. The Trojans did take the horse inside the city walls but whilst they were enjoying a drunken celebration of their victory, the Greeks climbed out of the horse, opened the city walls for the returning Greek army, and the city was sacked and the population slaughtered or enslaved. Helen was taken back to Mycenae.
L、Troy and the Trojan War became a staple myth of classical Greek and Roman literature and were revisited many times by writers in their works. Also in pottery decoration and in sculpture, artists were captivated by the Trojan War. Scenes of the judgment of Paris, Achilles fighting Hector, and Achilles playing dice with Ajax were just some of the myriad scenes from the story that would appear in art again and again over the centuries.

Laughter is a(n) 1)_response to being touched by a tickle (搔痒) – a natural response from the child. This puts the tickler in 2)_ of how much or how long the child laughs. We adults don’t read children’s minds, but we often have a(n) 3)_ that we can. So we usually think we’re aware of what’s too much tickling and when to stop. But it is possible to trap our children without knowing it. We parents become 4)_ to tickling because it seems to be a(n) 5)_ shortcut to laughter. Rather than forcing laughter in this way, we can 6)_ upon them inner confidence if we will get down on the floor and invite them to be in playful physical 7)_ with us. The physical contact that requires more creativity than tickling allows us to 9)_ around, to press our heads against their stomachs here and there for a second, and to manage an embrace before they make another daring escape. When families struggle
第一组数据
1、The phenomenon that children live in single-parent households is quite common in different communities in the US.
2、People with criminal records tend not to be good parents, and their failures may put their kids at a huge disadvantage.
3、Compared to children from solid married families, those from single-parent families are more likely to have various mental and behavioral problems.
4、Since the world is full of dangers, even children from stable families may become dropouts or young offenders.
5、Pointing out the danger of single-parent families is not to depreciate mothers’ role or ability in rearing children but to emphasize the actual benefits of stable, two-parent families.
6、The mothers may shut out the men who are unable to or unwilling to support their children financially.
7、People from broken families are confronted with many problems, but they can also become very successful.
8、Poverty rate in married-couple families is much lower than that of female-headed families.
9、A lot of praiseworthy efforts can be made to improve the fathers’ responsibility and help the at-risk young people.
10、In Chicago, many children come from broken families or families that never form from the very beginning.
第二组数据
A、It’s no secret what parents in solid, prosperous families do to give their children every chance of success in life. From the start, they strive to see that the children are safe and well-fed. They read to them, play with them, instruct them, discipline them and let them know they are loved.
B、When the kids start school, these mothers and fathers meet with teachers, go to school events and insist that homework should be completed. They ferry youngsters to soccer practices and piano lessons. They keep them off the streets. They encourage activities in and out of school that prepare them to be responsible, self-sufficient adults.
C、But there are no guarantees. A child with the most involved and devoted set of parents may drop out of high school, go to jail, abuse drugs or end up unemployed. The world is full of dangers, and a solid family can’t protect against them all.
D、Imagine, though, how much more immediate and potent those hazards are for children who don’t have the benefit of strong, well-functioning families. Actually, you don’t have to imagine. In Chicago, as in every other city, many kids grow up without two parents. Some young people never know their fathers, and their mothers may have children by other men. Families often disintegrate—or never form in the first place.
E、For a child, that can make all the difference in the world. It can mean poverty. It can invite abuse or neglect. It can hinder learning. It can mean getting on a wrong track that is very hard to escape. A bad start is often a lifelong impediment (阻碍). Not that early disadvantage translates to determinism and doom; many people begin with very little yet rise and thrive. They are, though, defying bleak odds.
F、This attention to deteriorating family structures is not new. In 1965, a US Department of Labor official named Daniel Patrick Moynihan created a long-running national debate with a report arguing that “the family structure of lower class African Americans is highly unstable, and in many urban centers is approaching complete breakdown”. He went on: “In essence, the African-American community has been forced into a matriarchal (母系的) structure which seriously hinders the progress of the group as a whole, and imposes a heavy burden on the African-American male and, in consequence, on a great many African-American women as well.” Moynihan’s diagnosis, controversial a half-century ago, became accepted wisdom. But at the time, the proportion of African-American children born out of wedlock (婚姻) was 24 percent. Today, nationally, it’s 72 percent.
G、Nor is the phenomenon unique to African Americans. Among Hispanics, 53 percent of births are to unmarried women. For non-Hispanic whites, the rate is 29 percent—higher than the 24 percent rate among African-Americans that so alarmed Moynihan in the mid-1960s. And in Chicago, 51 percent of all children live in single-parent households.
H、What are the consequences? Phillip Jackson, founder and executive director of the Black Star Project, minces no words. “The most important reason why parts of the South and West sides are the way they are is the breakdown of the family,” he says. “You can’t have a strong society without strong families.” The data bear him out. “Poverty rates in female-headed families now hover around 40 percent,” Ron Haskins of the liberal Brookings Institution recently wrote. “By contrast, children living in married-couple families have poverty rates that have been as low as seven percent in recent years.”
I、”Poverty is but one side effect,” writes analyst Robert Rector of the conservative Heritage Foundation. “When compared to children in intact married homes, children raised by single parents are more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems; be physically abused; smoke, drink, and use drugs; be aggressive; engage in violent, delinquent, and criminal behavior; have poor school performance; be expelled from school; and drop out of high school.” This is not because single parents are generally unloving, incompetent or uninvolved in their children’s lives. It’s because rearing kids, a tough task even for two parents, is far more formidable for only one. And stress at home doesn’t exist in isolation. Yes, it can lead to economic hardship, but it can also be the result of such hardship. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ on the Far South Side, says, “Men with jobs have a tendency to be in stable households”—and when employment opportunities grow scarce, stable households grow scarce, too. The effects of joblessness abound (大量存在). “Work gives people meaning,” says Moss. “Men unable to provide are not viewed as men.” If they have children, particularly out of wedlock, they may be unable or unwilling to provide financial support to those kids—and the mothers then may shut them out of their lives.
J、Children without fathers are at higher risk for all sorts of reasons. Boys and girls alike may suffer from not growing up with a model of how a man should behave. Based on his experience working with inmates, Moss says most of them have no relationship with their fathers. Ex-convicts, in turn, tend not to be good fathers or mothers themselves. Each generation’s failures put the next one at a huge disadvantage. The disadvantages breed despair.
K、How to stop this vicious circle, which has such deep historical and economic roots? There are many admirable efforts to promote responsible fatherhood and provide mentoring (指导) to at-risk youths. One initiative, called Becoming a Man—Sports Edition and funded through the University of Chicago Crime Lab, has provided “social-cognitive skill development through in-school and after-school programming” to disadvantaged young males and managed to reduce violent-crime arrests by 44 percent. Better schools, too, would give kids the tools they need to find jobs in today’s demanding economy. Greater emphasis on nurturing small businesses on dying streets could attract employers to provide those jobs. Reducing crime would help build stronger neighborhoods and retain families that may otherwise move to suburbia. The vicious cycle could become a virtuous one.
L、But the first step in solving a problem is recognizing it. Confronting the collapse of family structure risks offending those who think that pointing out the perils of single-parent households amounts to blaming the victims, or that noting the value of fathers demeans the sacrifices of mothers. The point, though, is not that mothers aren’t vital or that single-parent households can’t overcome the special challenges they face. The point is that a stable, two-parent home, on average, confers tangible advantages. When single-parent homes become the norm, as they have in many neighborhoods, children lack protections that can be critical.
M、Without acknowledging the importance of strong families, and without steps to create more of them, Jackson of the Black Star Project warns, “Nothing else that we do, in education, in economics, in incarceration (监禁), is going to work.” If, conversely, we can build stronger families, every other problem we face will be far easier to solve.
